Keeping Track

I have just decided to log, within these pages, the pages I have completed. And possibly thoughts to accompany them. I don't know that that will be all, but it will at this point be one of the purposes contained here. And what is simultaneously sad and funny to me is that while it is still January (albeit barely) I have already forgotten some from this year. So a quick catch up, unordered and raw from memory:

Somewhere In Time by Richard Matheson
Delicious in history and imagining...the Del has for my lifetime captured supposition and flight of fancy. Curious in theory, and evocative of romantic memories strung throughout the years of Mackinac, San Diego, the Victorian era, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and yes, even Christopher Reeve. Different, as is often the case, from the film, but equally captivating.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Transporting to another time and place, detailed in a caveat previously unknown to me. Satisfying resolution.

Mini Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella
Much anticipated (I honestly squealed when it arrived) and, of course, flown through! I relate far more than is comfortable, especially as this is a book I am less than thrilled to admit a penchant for. I laugh out loud with every single installment, and with this one giggled too at my children's horror upon hearing the summarized plot.

The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff
Having read another of David's books, The 19th Wife, and appreciated his approach to character based historical fiction (I guess as opposed to general event or era), I entered this one without foreknowledge of its topic. I finished it a day or two ago, and have been chewing on it ever since. Haunting, excruciating, beautifully written but painful to read, hollow in the hopelessness that it leaves you with.

So, there for now. I am attempting to ingrain 1000 Gifts, which arrived to my great delight and further audible joy on the same day as Shopaholic. (The polarity of which is not at all lost on me but relished.) Ah, the ecstasy of reading!
